I’ve been there

Going through graduate school as the mother of two young children, and a first generation Latinx immigrant, the imposter syndrome was real. In addition to juggling work, caregiving, and school, I had to overcome a lack of confidence in my academic writing. I would lose sight of the big picture and agonize over the same sentence for hours. Completing writing projects was an ordeal.

But I learned not to despair. I hit the writing centre. I sought support from peers and mentors. I studied the writing process. I learned that good writing does not happen in solitude. Knowing when to seek expert guidance is the key to completing writing projects, whether it is a thesis chapter, dissertation, journal article, or book manuscript.

Now I am a published researcher, and I enjoy sharing hard-learned lessons with early career scholars who are struggling with the next steps of a writing project. Whether you are looking for someone who can spot the typos, format your draft for submission, or decode reviewer feedback, I can help.  I specialize in developmental editing. By looking at the big picture, I help you identify what you have already accomplished, and provide you with tools to map out the next steps. Together, we design a revision strategy that transforms early drafts into submission shape.

You don’t have to do it alone. Let me provide you with a roadmap, so you can hit Submit!

Vannina Sztainbok, Ph.D.

I am a researcher, educator, and academic editor with 12 years of university teaching experience. As a professor, demystifying academic writing was a central focus of my pedagogy. I now enjoy supporting emerging scholars in achieving their writing goals. I have published articles in peer reviewed journals and edited collections and acted as a reviewer for academic presses and journals. I can guide you through the dissertation-writing and publishing process.

I work with social science scholars who may not fit the traditional mold. They range from PhD students who need support formatting and copy editing their theses to postdocs and faculty who are stalled on journal articles, book proposals, or manuscripts. Spanish is my mother tongue, and I am happy to work with other scholars who write “between tongues.” I have worked with academics who are doing projects in a variety of areas including Latin American feminisms, Black radical thought, poststructural theory, queer and trans liberation, and disability justice.

I value the sweat and tears that have gone into your scholarship.  I see the contributions you are already making. I work with you to not only revise your draft, but to help you find joy in writing.
